LSI Introduces New Media Processors to Drive Worldwide, High-Volume DVD Recorder Market
DoMiNo DVD recorder solutions deliver higher integration and improved cost- performance, enabling volumes and retail price points to capture the DVD playback market
NEW YORK, May 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE: LSI), the pioneer of innovative digital media processing technologies for the Digital Home, today announced two new DVD recorder system processors. With their high levels of integration and advanced features, these next- generation DoMiNo(R) processors (DMN-8604 and DMN-8654) are designed to address the worldwide, high-volume, DVD recorder market -- expected to reach over 36 million units in 2007.
With the introduction of the DMN-8604 and DMN-8654 media processors, consumer electronics manufacturers can respond to geographic trends and evolving market opportunities. The DMN-8604 is optimized to address entry- level, single-drive and combo VCR/DVD recorders with analog TV tuners. In addition, the DMN-8604 enables a new "tunerless" single-drive DVD recorder product category in the United States. Driven by the impending March 2007 FCC mandate, the DVD recorder market is expected to divide into two segments: digital tuner-compliant DVD recorders and entry-level "tunerless" DVD recorders. This "tunerless" product category is predicted to retail at prices below $99 and compete with many DVD players on the market today.
"Solutions like the LSI DMN-8604 will give consumers the option to purchase DVD players with recording capabilities at prices approaching those of playback-only devices. These types of DVD recorders become even more appealing in homes with existing set-top boxes, as a solution to archiving content and being able to take it with you," said Michelle Abraham, principal analyst, In-Stat. "Lower price points and other catalysts, like the FCC mandate, are driving the growth of DVD recorder volumes worldwide with greater than 30% year over year growth rates through 2008."
Designed for households receiving analog cable and terrestrial signals, the DMN-8654 processor enables advanced features for dual-drive HDD/DVD recorders with analog TV tuners. The DMN-8654 integrates dual USB 2.0 host interfaces for high-speed transfers of multimedia content and dual Ultra DMA (UDMA) 100 ATAPI interfaces for high-speed transfer between the HDD and optical disc drive. In addition, DMN-8654 integrates a serial flash memory interface to reduce bill of material costs and simplify designs. It also provides added copy protection with support for VCPS (Video Content Protection System).
"The DVD recorder market has evolved and grown to the size where multiple processor solutions are required to address diverse market segments. The flexibility of our DoMiNo architecture addresses this need and uniquely positions LSI to continue to succeed in this market," said Jim Fox, director of DVD recorder products, Consumer Products Group, LSI Logic. "The DMN-8604 and DMN-8654 not only expand the breadth of our media processor line, but also let our customers design and deliver a greater variety of products -- from entry-level, high-volume, analog models to high-end, combination, digital products."
Next-generation DVD recorder solutions from LSI integrate MPEG-4 and DivX(R) Pro encoding and decoding to increase the number of hours of video that can be recorded to a single optical disc. DMN-8604/54 products also feature LSI DVFX(TM) processing technologies for visibly superior video quality, and YesVideo's YesDVD software for easy dubbing and indexing of personal video content.
The DMN-8604 is offered in 256-pin plastic quad flat pack (PQFP) chip packaging to ease design and manufacturing of a low-cost printed circuit board (PCB). The DMN-8654 is offered in a 388-pin BGA package for backward- compatibility with the DMN-8653 for a simplified migration path.
